Over the past 6 weeks our DofE students have been learning basic First Aid skills, camp craft, the countryside code, map reading and how to put up a tent. On Saturday 29th March 60 students put their map reading skills to the test around White Horse hill and Woolstone.

🏆 10km in the sunshine and everyone made it back!

CHARITY FOCUS GROUP

This year the Charity Focus Group has chosen Cancer Research as their chosen charity.

On Friday 7th February, members of the group visited our local store in Greenbridge to build links with the team and gain promotional material to help raise awareness within school. They were made very welcome by assistant manager Tilly and her team and even got to do a few jobs around store! The group will begin fund raising by organising a non-uniform day next term, with more events to follow…!

Our Year 10 Health & Social Care students learnt that 1.5million older adults report feeling lonelier at Christmas time compared to any other time of the year. They discussed how they can support older adults physical, intellectual, emotional and social needs at this time of year. 

To finish the lesson they created Christmas cards to bring some joy to the residents of a residential home within our community.

HOUSE CHRISTMAS EXTRAVAGANZA!

Each house has been taking part in their final house challenge of 2024. This required lots of student participation in various activities including ‘pin the nose on Rudolph’, ‘Santa around the world quiz’ and ‘Making your own Christmas decorations’ for the tree!

The House Christmas Extravaganza Assembly was created to celebrate the wonderful efforts of students this term, further connect as a house and spread a little festive cheer before students leave us for the festive period!
The house challenge results will be shared in the first house assembly back after half term.

Our talented students in Year 10 got into the festive spirit last week by putting their creativity to the test as they planned and baked Christmas cakes! From decorating with bright colors to adding the perfect finishing touches, every student brought their own unique flair to their holiday treats.

We couldn’t be more proud of how engaged and excited everyone was throughout the process. This hands-on activity not only sparked creativity but also brought everyone together to celebrate the season.

Year 7 Basketball team first game of the year.
We came out on top against strong Swindon Academy team winning 12-4. Both teams played well.

GCSE FOOD WORKSHOP

Students were all slightly outside of their comfort zone (in a good way) and were all so engaged in acquiring some of the complex technical skills expected from them from their upcoming NEA 2! Mr Booker Wilson really inspired the students with his wealth of knowledge and experience in the food industry and I even over heard some conversations about students wanting to explore their options within this chosen path of career after today and using some of these skills towards their final NEA 2 cook.

It was such a wonderful day and we have all left with a real buzz!

Last night the Music Department hosted the first Recital Evening of this year. Eighteen students from across each year group performed music ranging from Pachelbel’s Canon to Don’t Look Back in Anger to an appreciative audience of family, friends and staff.

YEAR 10 GCSE MUSIC

Last week, the Year 10 GCSE Music class enjoyed a delightful concert given by members of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra at the Platform in Swindon.

The concert included music by Bach, Beethoven, Terry Riley and the premier of a new composition written especially for the event. Each piece was explained to the audience in an engaging manner and the experience has brought to life pieces of music that the class will study for their exams. There was also the chance to ask questions to the musicians about their careers and experiences.

SPORTS TOUR

Despite a wet and windy start upon arriving in Salou on Sunday, October 27th—after an epic 26-hour coach journey—55 Kingsdown students and staff dived straight into a week packed with adventure. From the first day, students made the most of every moment, beginning with a splash in the pool as soon as the weather eased, followed by a hearty feast at the ‘all-you-can-eat’ buffet.

Monday brought an early start at 6 a.m. as we headed to Valencia for a guided tour of the iconic Valencia CF stadium, the Mestalla. After a quick stroll through Valencia’s sights and local parks, students enjoyed learning about the club’s history before emptying their pockets at the team store. The group then hit the beach for some lively beach football. Later that evening, Mr. Mason’s team claimed a 4-0 victory over the Spanish side Les Borges, while Mr. Holmes’ team narrowly lost 1-0 to La Selva in a game they had dominated—until a surprise cross found the back of their net.

Tuesday the 29th kicked off with more early-morning training: footballers trained in Riudoms, and netballers at PLOMS. After regrouping at the hotel, the students set off for Barcelona, where they enjoyed an impressive immersive stadium tour filled with the club’s trophies and memorabilia. Another shopping spree followed, along with some evening karaoke, which our students tackled with enthusiasm and bravery.

Wednesday the 30th saw more training sessions and tournaments for both football and netball teams, playing against other English schools in a spirit of friendly competition. Mr. Mason and Mr. Shepherd led the youngest team to CF Reus, while Mr. Dadge and Mr. Mason returned to Riudoms, and Mrs. Ridley and Miss Maller took their netballers back to PLOMS for their matches. In the evening, Mr Dadge’s U15s took on Morell FC in an impressive stadium. The first half was tightly contested, with the score remaining 0-0 despite Kingsdown having most of the possession. However, in the second half, the boys responded superbly, playing some outstanding football and scoring a string of brilliant goals. The match ended in a resounding 4-0 victory for Kingsdown, driven by the enthusiastic chants and unwavering support from the Kingsdown fans, which undoubtedly spurred the team on. After some well-deserved downtime, students capped off the night with a hotel disco.

On Thursday, October 31st, our final day, we spent an exhilarating day at PortAventura, one of Europe’s largest theme parks. After one last meal at Playa de Park, we boarded the coach for the journey home.

Throughout the trip, the students consistently demonstrated the Kingsdown values: Pride, Ambition, Stretch, Challenge, Respect, and Responsibility.

Their energy, resilience, and eagerness to seize every opportunity made it an unforgettable week for all involved.

It was great to have Year 7 celebrating their first term at Kingsdown at our Halloween Quiz on Monday afternoon. It was a close finish with the ‘Halloween Gods’ and ‘The Originals’ teams having to take on the tie break question!

GCSE results day for 2024 will be on Thursday 22 nd August and we would like to invite your child to Kingsdown School from 10:00am till 11:30am to collect the statement of their grades in their GCSE examinations. Results statements will be available to collect from the Main School Hall, however if you would prefer to collect from the school reception please let us know in advance and we will endeavour to facilitate this for you.

Please note these are not the official certificates themselves as they are produced by the exam boards during November and will be available for collection in December. It is important that you do collect these as many companies and institutions will need to see them as evidence of your achievement as part of your application process. You will be notified of the exact date nearer the time.

We hope to see as many of you as possible to celebrate all that you have achieved during your time here at Kingsdown and to wish you well in whatever your future may hold.

University of Bath

On Wednesday 3rd July thirteen Year 8 students went to the University of Bath for their Graduation Ceremony from the Brilliant Club.

The Brilliant Club is an organisation that seeks to promote access to university and raise aspiration. All students have attended tutorials with a PHD Tutor studying the topic of Philosophy of Science: Why are we here? They all had to write a final assignment of 1500 words which was graded.

DofE Bronze Assessed Expedition

On the weekend of 29th/30th June 2024, 30 year 9 students completed their DofE Bronze Assessed Expedition at Sapperton in Gloucestershire. Over two days students walked 30+km, map read, camped overnight’ @The Daneway Inn, cooked and enjoyed the beautiful scenery.

DofE Bronze

On the weekend of 8th & 9th June 24, 31 year 9 students walked and camped in the Pewsey Vale for their Bronze award practice expedition. 2 days walking covering over 30km and an overnight camp. For many this was their first experience of sleeping outdoors.

Our DofE Silver students had a very successful 3 days walking and 2 nights camping for their practice expedition in the beautiful Gloucestershire countryside last weekend. We were very fortunate to camp in the grounds of Westonbirt school and walk in and around the Arboretum.

Women’s Super League!

On Sunday, we took 41 students to watch Bristol City Women play against Manchester City Women in the Women’s Super League. Lot’s of goals were witnessed, with Manchester City Women winning the game 4-0. A truly memorable experience for our students!

Pencelli Trip 2023-24

---

On Sunday 21st April 2024, 47 year 8 students and 5 staff departed by coach for Swindon Borough Council sponsored Plas Pencelli in south Wales, for a week of outdoor activities. Students would stay together in their activity group to take part in mountain walking, rock climbing, canoeing/kayaking, caving and gorge walking, that was only in the day! In the evenings, activities would include the Dingle descent, orienteering, problem solving, a football tournament and a walk in the local area. Plenty to keep them occupied and hopefully sleep, but that wasn’t the case for the first few evenings, too much excitement and chatting kept many awake well into the wee hours. Each morning the students would have a hearty breakfast of cereals, toast and a Pencelli cooked breakfast, after which they would make their own packed lunches and headed to their instructors for their activities briefing. Once briefed it was off to get changed into their activities clothing and collect their equipment before heading out for a day of fun and adventures.

After day 1 activities the students returned to the centre, showered and had some time to chill before dinner at 6pm. Everyone came together in the dining hall for a meal before heading out for a competitive and exciting evening of orienteering in the lovely grounds of Plas Pencelli.
Lights out at 10.30pm but sleep didn’t happen for everyone!!

Day 2 evening activity was the Dingle descent, students wearing full waterproofs descended into the valley that runs along the edge of the centre’s grounds, in the stream with overgrown banks, fallen trees, rocks and small boulders. In teams the students navigated over and under, sometimes through challenges along the Dingle. Not many remained dry and that included the staff (Mr Holmes in particular taking many a plunge into the water). Back for hot showers
and a change of clothes before some free time.

Day 3 was the highly anticipated football tournament. After quite a busy few days the students who didn’t play football welcomed an evening to chill with their friends and the opportunity to sit and chat, play board games, read and a cup of hot chocolate. A really lovely evening getting to know new people and make new friends.

Day 4 we had two birthdays to celebrate, Happy birthday to Charlie and Maisy, both students climbed Pen Y Fan with their birthday sashes and amazing photographs taken on the summit. After dinner the evening activity was problem solving, in groups students moved from minesweeper mats, crossing the shark infested waters with crates and planks, team ski-ing across the courtyard and gutterball, using short pieces of guttering to move a ball from A to B.
Some fantastic team work, working together to solve the challenges and a lot of fun was had.

Day 5 Friday was Mrs Matthews’ birthday, so we treated her to Gorge walking with all the students through the beautiful forest, following the Nant Bwrefwr waterway, sitting in waterfalls, sliding down rocks into water pools, walking along fallen trees, and through the 700m long disused railway tunnel. From the light into darkness before the light reappeared. An experience that challenges the senses. Back to the centre to change, eat birthday cake and
return back to school and waiting families.

Congratulations and thank you to our wonderful year 8 students who made Pencelli 2024 a fun filled, exciting and enjoyable trip for everyone. So many happy smiley faces were seen each day and so many memories were made.

We have now taken receipt of a whole class set of 30 VR/AR headsets at KDS. On Monday we had a staff training session from Class-VR which was extremely exciting. This really showed the potential of the headsets. In 2 just two hours, we were able to scuba dive with sharks, fly with the red arrows, immerse ourselves in the anatomy of mushrooms and even hold in our hands 3D models we created ourselves with CAD software.
With the use of other software such as ThingLink and CoSpaces, we are very excited to start making our own 3D virtual environments with personalised learning outcomes specific to KDS.
